Canyon Charter Elementary

Although the Palisades Fire left Canyon Charter Elementary School structurally unharmed, because of the proximity of the campus to the burn scar, and out of an abundance of caution, Los Angeles Unified commissioned a battery of rigorous tests to measure the environmental safety on both campuses.

Current as of 4/2/25

Summary of Testing Results

Results of soil and wipe sampling data collected at Canyon Charter Elementary School by environmental consulting firm TRC indicate no environmental impacts from the fire, or are at levels that are above safety thresholds. “The data collected from soil, indoor dust, and air samples indicates that residual impacts to the Site in soil, dust, and indoor air as related to the nearby recent Palisades wildfires are not considered a health concern at this time,” reads the report summary, which can be accessed below. As for recommendations for further action, “the results indicate that the active measures currently taken by Los Angeles Unified are sufficient, and TRC does not have any recommendations for further action at this time.

What is Being Tested/Sampled

Environmental consultants collected samples at both Canyon Charter Elementary School and Paul Revere Charter Middle School and analyzed them for various metals and chemicals (see list below). The results from this phase of testing demonstrated that no additional testing was needed.

  • Analysis was performed for constituents such as Antimony (Sb), Arsenic (As), Barium (Ba), Beryllium (Be), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Molybdenum (Mo), Nickel (Ni), Selenium (Se), Silver (Ag), Thallium (Tl), Vanadium (V), Zinc (Zn), and Mercury (Hg), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), and Asbestos.
  • Indoor air was also screened for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatiles. A survey for particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) was also conducted.
